Weekly Topics ~ March 23

One more week til Spring Break! YAY!

Just a reminder that your child will need a fully disposable lunch on Wednesday, as we will be taking our field trip to the Lake County Fair Grounds for some agricultural awareness!

Here's what's going on this week:

Reading: We are working on the comprehension strategy on inferencing.  Students are learning to take what they already know, add it to clues from the text, and make an inference.

Spelling: We are working on words that end in -el, -le, -il, and -al.

Writing: We are still working on our grammar unit.  This week the focus is on pronouns and adverbs.

Math: The focus in math is capacity and weight, using both customary and metric units.  This chapter is going to continue after spring break, so we will be taking a mid-chapter quiz on Friday.

BEARS Time: We are working with our Smartgoal for subtraction.  Students have been working on subtracting across zeros.  We are working with numbers in the thousands this week.

Here are our learning goals:

Reading: I use my background knowledge and clues from the text to make an inference.

Writing: I can understand and use different parts of speech.

Math: I can estimate and measure different units of weight and capacity.

Weekly Topics ~ Week of March 9

After Monday, we will be done with ISTEP testing!! YAY! So much hard work and focus went into testing.

This week, we will be doing alot of wrapping up units that we have been working on.

Also, we will be taking our IREAD practice test on Wednesday, March 11 and taking the actual
I-READ-3 Test Monday, March 16!

Here's what's going on this week:

Reading - We will be wrapping up our unit on nonfiction text features by Wednesday.  Our next unit is going to be on the strategy of inferencing as we read. More information on that will follow next week.

Spelling - We WILL have a spelling unit this week! Lists went home Monday.  This week, we will be working with words that end in -er and -est.

Writing - We are going to start a grammar unit in writing.  This will cover various parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, etc.) and sentence structure. This is one of my personal favorites :-)

Math - We will be taking our Chapter 8 test on Tuesday. A study guide went home last week.  Our next chapter is going to cover capacity, weight and volume.

Science - We are taking our Simple Machines test on Thursday. A study guide went home Monday and discovereducation.com can be used to study the 6 different simple machines.

Here's to warmer temps this week! 3 weeks til Spring Break! We can do it!

Weekly Topics ~ Week of February 23

I can't even believe it is already the last week of February! Is it spring yet?!

This week, we will be doing the ISTEP practice test. ISTEP starts March 2.

Reading ~ Continuing our unit with nonfiction text features.  We are learning how to read and understand charts, diagrams, maps, etc. Looking at text features is often something we skip over as readers. But they give us so much information!

Writing ~ Most of our writing time this week will be lent to ISTEP practice.  In between that, the students will have time to free write.

Math ~ We will be starting Chapter 8 on Tuesday.  This chapter has to do with algebraic thinking and problem solving...definitely a challenging subject! We will start slow with number sentences.

Science ~ We are still working on Simple Machines.  I am thinking a test next week.

Here are our learning goals:

Reading: I can apply knowledge of  text features in a non-fiction text to gain information and meaning from a text.

Writing: I can respond to a prompt after reading two different texts for a variety of different purposes.

Math: I can solve real world, multi-step problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I can find a rule when solving these problems.

Science: I can name the simple machines and tell which could solve real world problems.

Weekly Topics ~ Week of February 17

Reading ~ We will be starting a new unit in reading this week.  We are focusing on nonfiction text features. These are things like charts, graphs, diagrams, etc.  Students have seen these before, but we will be looking at much more complex features this time around.

Writing ~ We are still working with our test study unit in writing.  I-STEP is only a few short weeks away!  Students are being asked to read TWO lengthy texts and then answer a writing prompt about what they have read.  Some prompts can have up to 4 parts to answer.

Math ~ We will spend next week wrapping up Chapter 11.  The plan is to have a test on Thursday or Friday over: 3-dimensional shapes, symmetry, congruence, coordinate planes, angles, lines, and number lines. WHEW! We covered alot this chapter! A study guide will go home Tuesday.

Science ~ Simple Machines unit started on Wednesday.  Have your child show you what they are learning about on discoveryeducation.com.

Here are our learning goals:
